Often children can type messages on a smartphone, but they may have difficulties using a computer keyboard and understanding the meaning of different keys in a word processor. For example, it has been noted that pupils may have gaps in skills such as starting with a lower case letter (shift-up), spacing words (space) and using special characters (e.g. the @ sign in an email or the backslash in an online address).
